It is often astonishing how much goes on behind the scenes to ensure that our lives can go smoothly. For a church service, it is no different; our sacristans’ tireless work to amply prepare for everything that needs to happen in a mass often goes unnoticed.

If one pays attention, they may sometimes catch a glimpse of some individuals silently setting up the altar before a mass. But their work goes well beyond that: they also have to make preparations for special baptism, marriage and funeral masses, ensure there are sufficient hosts for communion for the entire year, maintain cleanliness of the sacrament and sacristy areas as well as the sacred vessels, and keep the vestments of the priests and servers in order, etc. Though perhaps less prominent, such a job is, as one of the many parts in the body of the Church, essential.
